Work can be a drag or a joy. The difference often comes down to who we work with and how we work together.
When I started my career as an engineer at Hewlett Packard, I lucked into a project that continues to shape my path more than 25 years later. This was in the early days of the personal computer – they were massive, expensive and prone to bursting into flames. I was part of a small group of engineers at HP’s headquarters tasked with figuring out how to build the very first generation of its personal computers. The schedule was crazy; the technology unproven; and our partners in HP’s worldwide manufacturing sites were distrustful of the ivory tower “kids” at headquarters messing with their livelihoods.
Our first attempt was a disaster, costing the company millions of dollars and raising the question of whether our goal was even technically possible. Our group expected to be fired. Instead HP management told us, “We’ve already paid for the lesson here – now go get it.” Instead of firing us – we were charged with the same crazy schedule, the same nascent technology, and the expectation that as a team we would find a way to meet our project goals.
And a funny thing happened – the group grew into high performing team. We delivered results 1000 times better than expected and we had a helluva good time doing it.
While I remember the long hours, the exhausting travel, and the never-ending experiments to design a robust system – what I most cherish are the memories of the people and the synergy of how we worked together. It was one of the most satisfying experiences in my career, and through all the twists and turns of my career since then – people and how they work together has been at the heart of my work.
Fast forward through my career – it has meandered through software development, engineering management, program management, sales, investing and consulting. Throughout it all – the focus is on the people and the empowered results they can produce together.
With Powered by Teams – I am delighted to collaborate with business teams to achieve synergistic, kickass results while having the time of our professional lives.
